Fate's Interesting News Bits V.6

Israel Escalates – From the tragic deaths of a  few children to now many more. Sad, but not surprising.

Germany Spanks Brazil … and then is overly polite about it – The real story here is seeing the general level of sportsmanship going on in Soccer…er, football. Sorta weird, as an American it feels a bit out of place. Shouldn’t Germany be like – “We crushed Brazil, now it’s you Argentina”, and then Argentina can trash talk back?

One Terminal KCI – I Love our Airport, and the “one terminal” stories sadden me. Talking to some people that fly more often, I can understand some of the desire, and the crumbling infrastructure… Still… I hope it doesn’t turn into some of the madhouses I’ve seen elsewhere in the country.

Pat Roberts Thinks Musicians Should Work For Free – I don’t agree with Knapp’s politics, but seeing several of my friends faced with extreme challenges being musicians – expected to work for free – I’m highly annoyed by the Roberts’ campaign would go after Knapp for being paid to provide band service. I’d be more disturbed if Knapp played for free than asked for money for an event. He’s an entertainer, he deserves to be paid. And, really, Roberts whole “gaffe” is just nothing more than the TRUTH biting him on the ass. I’ll cross my fingers for a sane candidate to win (hint: not Wolf or Roberts).  Given the lax residency standards, we should just find a bunch of crazy liberals willing to rent a room in the state with the “intention” of staying.

Elon Musk Donates $1mil – The Tesla museum thing might actually end up happening. The Oatmeal managaed to bring him out for a solid million dollar donation.

Skeet Shooting With Prizes – Amazon is going to start testing drones for package delivery.

Claiborne Richardson Wants Pictures of a Kid’s Cock – One of the most enraging news stories I’ve seen in a while. Hopefully this worthless pile of human excrement looses his position as a DA. Because the point of child-porn laws is to go after teenagers sexting. Of course, we prosecute the MALE only. If this isn’t selective prosecution, I have NO IDEA WHAT IS.

Mind Controlled Google Glass – Maybe just a little bit more creepy? Technology is moving in interesting directions. In other brain control news, a quadriplegic can now move his fingers.

Verruckt Open – No news yet of mass accidents on the waterslide. I’ve already added this to my “TODO” list.

Live Smallpox – Nature will find a way… In this case, apparently, an old broom closet left forgotten for years. Scary.

Fate's Interesting News Bits V.5

Ebola Desperate Measures – The continuing Ebola outbreak has people calling for using experimental treatments. The lack of a coordinated response in West Africa is scary.

Revenge Killings Jerusalem – An eye for an eye…. People are angry.

Hobby Lobby Ends the World – Supreme Court helps. I need to read the opinion still, but have my doubts that this is the world ending decision people make it out for.

Facebook Still Evil – I completely hate the “news view”. I usually end up looping through my friend’s pages to get a feel for what they’re doing. It’d be nice if a distributed solution took over.

First Female 4star Admiral – Woman continues to show young girls what they can accomplish should they desire  a military career.

Video Game Gender Stupidity – Shockingly, girls can play games just as good or better as boys? We don’t need gendered tournaments for games? Really…. nahhhhhhhh, you don’t say. Dumbasses. Glad things got corrected.

Sad Story – I really hope this ends with the maximum possible penalty for this evil turd. It made the rounds, and reminds me that as positive as I think people can be… some people just need put down.

Fate's Interesting News Bits V.4

Nest Spy – Nest is adding new features to share the data they collect with Google. Now, Google can watch your home habits as well….

Drone Memo – White House has released their “justification” for killing an American citizen via  a drone strike.

Swat Teams Immune – Police organizations are claiming that swat teams are private corporations, and therefore immune to information requests.

Supreme Court has been Busy:

NYC can’t ban sugary drinks – Some sanity? Courts say people have a right to buy 24oz sodas.

Hospitals Data Mining – Use a charge card to buy donuts? Might get a call from your Doctor.

WWIII Starts in Ukraine? – Slowly developing into the Cuban Missile Crisis of my generation, Russia, the UN, and EU continue their little spat.

Fate's Interesting News Bits V.3

Justina Pelletier Goes Home – Hopefully there’s some justice here…. Not sure what justice here would be, but I don’t think the medical community was cool in how they handled the case.

Bionic Pancreas  – Parents do cool things for their kids. An electronic pancreas? This will really help people.

GM Banana – Our obsession with creating Soylent Green continues. Maybe we should cut to the chase and introduce people grinders?

Gas Tax Hike – Two senators are looking to jack up the price of gas.

IRS Recycles Hard Drives – The IRS apparently destroyed the “crashed” hard drive that held all the pertinent E-Mails the GOP wants to read. You’d expect that the people requiring us to keep records would be better at… keeping records. $10 million to recover a bunch of E-Mails, and an “underfunded” IT budget. Maybe I should jump into document recovery…

Amazon Fire non-Smart Smartphone – Want nice hardware but a neutered experience? Consensus is growing that there are better walled garden solutions. I’ll stick to my standardish Android experience thank you very much.

NSA Funding Cut By House Vote – I give no chance of this living, but some of our representatives think it’s a bad idea to watch our emails and phone calls… A third of them don’t.

Poachers Suck – Sato the elephant was killed by poachers. Sad. May they rot in hell with the ivory the collected shoved someplace very uncomfortable.

Nixon Energy Plan – The Governor signed an executive order to investigate alternative energy solutions for our state.

Fates Interesting News Bits V.2

Nonprofit food sharing lives another day – The Kansas City city council couldn’t agree on an ordinance to force non-profits to follow the same food safety rules  / certification / training requirements of commercial kitchens.

Uber Cab Protests – Cab drivers protested en masse over Uber  and similar services moving in on their turf. Right or wrong, Uber drivers are currently ignoring or skirting the law in a lot of areas. Perhaps laws requiring $200,000 permits to operate a cab don’t deserve observing?

Republican Majority Leader Cantor Looses Primary – While the media are portraying this election as a Tea Party win, I take it as a sign that Americans are growing tired of our worthless representatives. Hopefully the Democrats/Occupy crowd can score some similar wins.

One in Three Americans Are At Risk or Have Diabetes – Our nation’s obsession with Junk Food is beginning to make our previous smoking habit look good. 29 million diabetics in the US, with another 86 million at high risk.

NetFlix Drama – The rumbles of NetFlix vs. Verizon have the FCC looking into things. Meanwhile, technology workers see immediate impacts and issues caused by the current peering drama. While you can’t stop the signal, it’s not looking strong right now.

FBI Hiring Potheads –  If you’re a security researcher, the FBI may turn a blind eye to a certain habit… At least for now.

ComCast owns your modem – ComCast silently turned on Wifi sharing across many subscribers. Funny… my internet terms of service wouldn’t let ME do this, but it’s ok for them.

Grumpy Cat Movie – Lifetime is creating a live Christmas special for Grumpy cat, “Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever”. You know you’re going to watch it… At least for 5 minutes.

Fate's Interesting News Bits V.1

I’ve decided to start posting the news stories I find interesting throughout the week here. Mostly, so I can look back and laugh at the things I found interesting:

Bergdahl Prisoner Swap Controversy – making the rounds with conservatives screaming about changing attitudes toward negotiations and status of the Taliban.

Kansas City VA Waiting Lists – Looks like our local hospitals are part of the VA waiting list scandal. I don’t think your politics matters when saying – this ain’t right.

Hipsters get new apple toys – WWDC is making a splash in tech circles. (Troll Comment: Microsoft already did most of this with Windows 8).  Seriously, some of this looks fairly cool. I’m still not a fan of the ‘walled garden’ though.

Kiera Wilmot Graduates – Remember the girl that accidentally-on-purpose set off a small chemical reaction and got busted for making a soda bottle pop? She managed to finish High School and get into college. She’s still playing the “oops I didn’t realize” card, but I’m glad that story finished out ok.

NetFlix and Verizon Flirt with destroying net neutrality – How long will I get to maintain a blog without becoming or joining a media company? Let’s hope the web remains free. There’s no good side in this debate, NetFlix is looking for a free lunch, and Verizon is rent-seeking.

Bill Waterson Cameo – I like Pearls before Swine… but man… Why that one? That’s one crazy cameo story. Wonder if he was scratching a creative itch? I know he’ll never see my ‘lone’ blog post out here but: Please do a WebComic. Plz. With a cherry on top. That’s a genre that could use some ‘old school’ creator to come in and make it a thing.

Sure there’s other stuff this week, but… I’m just starting this out.
